Dalston Type Safari

A few weeks ago I signed myself up to a creative session in Dalston, called a type safari. It sounded fun, and I hoped it would not only improve my knowledge of typography but also help me become even more creative. Before the session began we were asked to think of a phrase about Dalston and write it down before the session. Having not been to Dalston before and not being familiar with the area I googled what it was like and came across musician Sam Lee’s quote ‘it’s not violent, but it’s vibrant’. I thought that was quite nice and something i could experiment with.

The session began by the tutor Sarah going through different types of typography and where we might find them on different signage in Dalston. This I found particularly interesting and I would have liked to have heard a lot more. The type safari opened my eyes to the different fonts that are used in branding for shops, restaurants and bars. We noticed that pubs had similar typography as did chicken and kebab shops.

Using our quote that we had bought along with us, we took photos of different lettering that we could make up our phrase with. Below is my creative. I love typography but have never been a huge fan of collage typography such as the below. However this experiment I thoroughly enjoyed and I think its something that can be developed further making visually exciting and captivating graphics.

Video

Love how British film Director Guy Ritchie has directed this short action type film of David Beckham’s new range for H&M. H&M have yet again proven that they are the best at collaborations. With a strong marketing and creative team this short film is funny and adventurous and with Beckham running round in his his underwear a sure winner with women all over the world.
